During an excursion, Lillian I.*, a 48-year-old woman from Australia, got lost in the middle of the Mitta Mitta bushland and without a mobile network.
Luckily for her, family members alerted the police when Lillian missed a daily check-in call. An extensive search was then started.
It wasn’t until five days, when the area was flown by helicopter, that emergency services were able to locate Lillian’s car and locate the woman, ABC News reports. The nearest town was 60 kilometers away. Police officer Martin Torpey says: “Because she has health problems, she couldn’t walk to get help and stayed with her car.”
This made it easier for emergency services to locate them. In addition, the heating in her car kept her warm in winter temperatures of 2 degrees.
The police also reveal that Lillian I survived the five days before she was rescued with only a few provisions, lollipops and a bottle of wine.
It was sheer coincidence that she had the wine with her. Actually, Lillian I. does not drink alcohol. “She bought the bottle of wine as a gift for her mom,” says Torpey.
After the rescue, the woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for dehydration. Otherwise she’s fine.
