The former leader of the far-right Proud Boys and three other members of the group have been convicted of the attack on the US Capitol. A jury in a Washington court on Thursday found Henry “Enrique” Tarrio and three other men guilty of, among other charges, “inciting conspiracy” in connection with the January 6, 2021 attack, according to US media, including the Washington Post » and reported the « New York Times» unanimously. This offense is used very rarely in the judicial history of the country.
The suspects were charged with conspiracy to use force to prevent the democratic transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election. Several members of the far-right militia ‘Oath Keepers’ had previously been convicted of ‘inciting conspiracy’.
The sentences for the convicts will be determined later. A maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison can be imposed for “inciting conspiracy”.

Congress met there to formally confirm Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
