As president of the UN Security Council, Cassis calls for confidence

Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis is the first member of the Swiss state government to chair a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York this Wednesday. The Minister of Foreign Affairs wants to use the debate to restore confidence between the political actors.

“Where there is trust, anything is possible,” Cassis said the morning before the meeting. Behind institutions are people, just like families or neighbors. Dealing with them requires transparency, honesty and a willingness to compromise.

The same goes for the international community. Referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Cassis said lasting peace can only be achieved if everyone abides by the agreed rules.

Switzerland will chair the Security Council, the most powerful UN body, for the first time in May. It may therefore convene special sessions on topics of its priorities. In addition to promoting sustainable peace, this also includes protecting the civilian population and taking measures to combat climate change. (sda)
