When you sit down in a café these days, you will find them on almost every table: the laptops. The mobile devices enable flexible working – anytime, anywhere. The problem: Many customers order just one coffee – and then sit for several hours.
A cafe in Stuttgart is now creaking. Laptops are now strictly prohibited at the Silberknie factory.
The operators explain their motives to the “Stuttgarter Zeitung”: More and more guests have complained that other customers have, as it were, moved their offices to the café. They blocked the rooms with stacks of documents.
Many couldn’t stand the noise level either. Because: video conferences and phone calls were made with no regard for the other guests.
Consumption was extremely modest: an espresso or a glass of water was often the only thing ordered.
For this reason, the “silver knee” came up with the idea of banning – or at least severely restricting – its use. Specifically: The use of laptops is still limited at a table. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. you can still browse the devices there.
Numerous users have commented on social media about the new laptop ban. Another trend café from Stuttgart writes on Instagram: “You are all still very welcome here. You are welcome to bring your whole monitor with you». The comment gets a lot of likes. The problem with the laptop seems to be an emotional one.
Others, however, show understanding for the silver knee. They think it’s good that when visiting a café they no longer “sit among working people” and “have to feel like they are in the office”, say several Stuttgart residents.
Who knows, visitors may actually concentrate more on good conversations and the wonderful smell of coffee in their noses. (A)
