Since the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the Russian army has been bombing Ukrainian cities and towns, sometimes all over the country. A number of places have been largely destroyed and fighting continues, especially in the east of the country. But it turns out that while Ukraine is defending itself domestically, it is also attacking targets on Russian soil.
Usually these are attacks on supply locations, reported the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (FAZ), which collected the associated attacks. Ammunition and fuel supplies are particularly targeted, the report said.
The American non-governmental organization “Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project” (ACLED), cited by the “FAZ”, has identified a total of 602 “events” since April 21, 2022 – most of them, 440 – are explosions. Usually they took place in the immediate border area with Ukraine, especially in the Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod regions, and only occasionally inland.
Some examples of the ACLED project:
According to the list, the focus is also on the Crimean peninsula, which has been annexed in violation of international law and which Ukraine continues to claim as its own territory. There, Ukraine mainly attacks positions of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, you can read more about this here.
For October 8 ACLED also mentions the huge explosion at the bridge to Crimea near Kerch. A transporter had exploded there, among other things. The bridge is of great importance to Russia, as the supply of the peninsula is organized over it.
Not all recorded “events” can be traced back to Ukraine. ACLED also lists actions by the domestic police, such as arresting people for anti-war demonstrations or YouTube videos criticizing the military.
Unmanned drones are often used in the suspected Ukrainian attacks in the Russian border area. At the end of December, a drone is said to have entered the Engels air base in the Saratov region and destroyed the infrastructure there, as you can read here. The attack took place hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian border and several people were killed. Probably to disable Russian long-range aircraft, the Ukraine also allegedly attacked a base in Diagilyevo near Ryazan.
According to the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, thirty people have died in the vicinity of Belgorod in suspected Ukrainian attacks. In early March, a “Russian Volunteer Corps” fighting on the Ukrainian side was reportedly deployed in the Bryansk region. Details often remain obscure and the Russian side sometimes covers up events, probably to avoid being too vulnerable.
In Russia they are now arming themselves against such attacks, drone interception systems have been set up near Moscow and anti-aircraft equipment has also been observed in the Russian capital. Ukraine does not comment specifically on these attacks, it is believed that it does not want to deter international allies.
