For example, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan watched his first public appearance since his illness.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, 69, has appeared in a video call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, 70, following speculation about his health.

The two leaders attended a fuel rod delivery ceremony at the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in southern Turkey online on Thursday. All reactors at the nuclear power plant would be commissioned in stages by 2028, Erdogan said, looking a little pale. “This plant will supply ten percent of our country’s electricity consumption.” The Russian state-owned company Rosatom is leading the construction of the Mersin nuclear power plant.

Speculation of a heart attack dismissed

The 69-year-old Erdogan had to interrupt a television interview on Tuesday evening because of stomach problems. He then took a break from campaigning for the May 14 parliamentary and presidential elections.

The video swap was Erdogan’s first public appearance since then. It was initially unclear when he would resume his election campaign. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca (58) had reported that Erdogan had contracted gastroenteritis but was now on the mend. “His health is extremely good,” Koca said.

There had been speculation about Erdogan’s health before, for example that Erdogan had suffered a heart attack. A spokesperson rejected this late Wednesday evening as unfounded.

Parliamentary and presidential elections will be held in Turkey on May 14. According to polls, a neck-and-neck race ensued between Erdogan and his closest challenger, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu (74). Erdogan is conducting an intense election campaign and usually performs in front of an audience three times in one day. (SDA)
