Both witnesses on the ground and passengers on the plane shared videos of flames coming from the turbines of a Boeing 737 on social media. The aircraft departed at 07:43 from Glenn Columbus International Airport in the US state of Ohio, with destination Phoenix. A passenger told the TV station WBNS: “The pilot called us on the radio and said geese had been sucked into the turbine and started a fire.”
Passengers reported hearing “strange knocking noises” on the plane. Ryan Brink, who was on board, posted a video of the burning turbine and photos on his Facebook page after landing. In one photo, the machine’s wing and turbine are smeared with blood. Brink commented, “Damned geese. For the first time I saw a fire on board and had to make an emergency landing.”
Erin Renee, from Columbus, heard over her house how the plane was going to land again around 8:15 a.m. and wrote on Twitter: “The plane’s engines sounded like they were going to give up the ghost.”
Nevertheless, the pilot managed to land the machine safely at 08:22. The fire service extinguished the fire and all occupants were able to disembark unharmed. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident. (jmh)
