Climate activists cause chaos before the start of the Formula E race in Berlin.

Everything was ready for a Formula E race festival in Berlin on Sunday afternoon. The weather was good, the grandstands were full and the cars were in their starting positions when suddenly several climate activists climbed over the fence and tried to stick themselves right in front of the cars on the track.

Security forces responded quickly and dragged the rioters off the track to the applause of the crowd. According to media reports from Germany, six people were arrested and no one was injured in the action.

The climate group “Last Generation” campaigned for the action. “We are on the Formula E circuit to sound the alarm. It’s time to slow down. Because we are on the highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator,” the group wrote on Twitter.

“What the fuck”

Not only the public but also the drivers reacted incomprehensibly: «At first I assumed it was a marshal with yellow flags. But then the person jumped over the fence and sat right in front of my car. I just thought: ‘What the fuck’,” driver Lucas di Grassi (38) told the online portal e-formel.de after the race.

For the Brazilian, a racetrack is the wrong place for such a protest: “It is better to demonstrate in a museum or somewhere else. Mainly for their own safety. I think I’ve seen everything in Formula E now!”

fight for the same cause?

Porsche driver Antonio Felix da Costa (31) does not understand the action because you are actually fighting for the same thing. “We are by far the most sustainable and ecological motorsports series that has ever existed and we want to convince people that electric cars are cool, fast and efficient.”

Activists also sat in front of the car of McLaren driver Jack Hughes (28). The Englishman was particularly concerned about safety: “If someone jumps over a fence, it becomes life-threatening. On the one hand for him, but also for us and other fans.” However, the organizers handled the situation very quickly and well.

After the incident, the cars were able to start seven minutes later. (byl)
