Deutsche had sent a letter to the affected countries and proposed appropriate measures with regard to products such as wheat, corn and sunflowers.

A spokeswoman for the committee said this on Wednesday. What these measures look like in detail was not said. Theoretically, tariffs could be levied on agricultural imports again. Due to the Russian offensive war, no tariffs are currently levied on Ukrainian agricultural products.

Poland and Hungary this weekend imposed an import ban on grain and other agricultural products from Ukraine. The government in Warsaw responded to protests from farmers who felt pressured by cheap imports.

Poland and Ukraine subsequently announced a solution on Tuesday evening. In the future, it will be ensured that no Ukrainian grain remains in Poland. The Commission welcomed the agreement in principle. However, a spokeswoman stressed: “We insist this is a first step.” An EU solution is needed. The Commission has always stressed that trade policy is an EU competence and that unilateral action is not acceptable.

In addition, the European Commission has provided information on a second aid package for affected countries. After the decision to grant 56 million euros in support was made at the end of March, the new package will be worth 100 million euros.

Slovakia has also restricted imports from Ukraine, but insists that transit is still allowed. In addition, Bulgaria has imposed an import ban from 24 April to the end of June. However, the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products is still possible.
