An EU commissioner working in the Sudanese capital Khartoum was shot.

In Sudan, which has been shaken by a violent power struggle, an employee of the European Commission has been shot. A spokeswoman for the agency confirmed this on Wednesday.

Accordingly, it is the head of the office of the Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Management (ECHO) in the capital Khartoum. He is Belgian and has been working there in this capacity since 2019. For security reasons, the spokeswoman did not provide information about the circumstances of the incident and the severity of the injuries. She also declined to say anything about his current whereabouts.

Employees disappeared overnight

The “New York Times” reported that the man was seriously injured, but not life-threatening. He is said to have disappeared in the night from Sunday to Monday and was only found by colleagues on Tuesday.

The EU had already confirmed an attack on the EU ambassador to Sudan on Monday evening. According to the latest information, Irishman Aidan O’Hara (58) was attacked and robbed in his home by armed men in military uniforms. He was unharmed.

In Sudan, fierce fighting has been going on since the weekend between the country’s two most powerful generals and their units. Since a joint military coup in 2021, the two men have led the country in Northeast Africa with a population of about 46 million. De facto president Abdel Fattah al-Burhan (63), also commander-in-chief of the army, is fighting with the army against his deputy Mohammed Hamdan Daglo (48), the leader of the powerful paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF). At least 270 people have been killed and 2,600 injured in the fighting since Saturday, according to the United Nations. (SDA)
