A mass panic killed 78 people in Yemen on Thursday.

At least 78 people have been killed in a stampede in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, according to Houthi rebels. At least 110 other people were injured in the riots in the capital Sanaa, an employee of the rebel health organization said Thursday morning.

According to the Houthi rebels, the riot broke out during a charity drive. Merchants allegedly handed out money to the crowd, leading to a wild crush.

Numerous bodies lie in a row on the floor

In videos intended to show the scenes after the incident, numerous bodies lay on the ground. The exact background and the exact number of fatalities initially remained unclear. The tragedy allegedly happened at a donation distribution point in the Yemeni capital.

The head of the Supreme Political Council, Mahdi al-Maschat (37), called for clarification of the incident. A designated commission arrived at the scene of the incident that evening, according to a Saba report.

The civil war in Yemen, which has been going on since 2014, is classified by the UN as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. In the conflict, the troops of the exiled Sunni president Abd Rabbo Mansur Hadi (77) are taking on the Shiite Houthi rebels. The government forces are supported by a military alliance led by Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels receive support from Iran. Recently there has been a rapprochement between the warring factions.
