For almost exactly three years, the Chinese have been at the helm of GC. In April 2020, the owners, who already owned English Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers, took over.
Since then, the return to Super League has been missed (2020), then promoted (2021) and the class retained (2022), with the standings narrowly avoiding participation in the relegation barrage. Also in the current season, the Grasshopper Club is more concerned with the bottom of the table than the top positions. The glorious times of the record champion are longer and longer.
And so it should come as no surprise to anyone that the Chinese are unlikely to object much to the end of their Zurich adventure. According to business portal “Bloomberg,” GC owner Jenny Wang is working with an investment bank that is scrutinizing potential buyers.
GC interim chairman Andras Gurovits confirmed his interest in the club to “Blick”. Questions have been asked about this lately. “As part of a professional process, the owner now wants to have the options for action investigated,” says Gurovits, who works as a lawyer in daily practice.
However, he emphasized that there was no concrete intention to sell. The Chinese owners would honor their financial obligations to GC. “The club is not for sale.”
However, this attitude can change if a bid is judged to be sufficiently high. (RAM)
