At least 29 dead after hospital fire in Beijing

The death toll in a fire at a hospital in Beijing has risen to 29. A day after the fire at Changfeng Hospital in Fengtai district, southwest of the Chinese capital, the deputy chief of the city fire brigade pointed to renovation work as a possible cause.

According to initial investigations, sparks may have ignited combustible materials. Other backgrounds have yet to be determined. Twelve people responsible were initially arrested. Among them were the director of the hospital and two employees of the construction company involved.

In the fire, the fire brigade has brought 142 patients to safety and transferred them to other clinics, state media report. Most of the fatalities were bedridden, elderly patients. Several doctors and nurses suffered burns.

In response, authorities have ordered security checks at all hospitals in the capital, as the “China Daily” reported.
