Doctors in Berlin anesthetize patients – and do not operate on them

1052 cases of joint dangerous bodily harm and 1764 cases of gang and commercial fraud: these are the charges against two Berlin doctors and their medical assistants. They allegedly made false diagnoses and planned surgeries for five years. They allegedly sedated the patient during the operations, but the operation was never performed.

Private patients experienced this nightmare in a practice in Berlin-Schöneberg, as the “Spiegel” writes. Between January 2013 and June 2018, an internist and an anesthesiologist diagnosed each patient with the same diagnosis: Beret’s syndrome. The disease is a precursor to esophageal cancer and is treated on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Heartburn patients, in particular, became operas of the nasty scam.

He stole more than a million euros

The now 72-year-old internist would first have convinced his patients of the necessity of the procedure. The 67-year-old anesthesiologist is said to have stunned the unsuspecting, although no operations were performed. In the end, they were billed for the surgery.

This allowed the anesthetist to sneak in a total of 137,623 euros (or 135,357 francs). The internist is said to have defrauded more than a million euros for the alleged operations.

The doctor’s assistant and partner of the internist are said to be involved in the fraud. Now they all have to answer for themselves in court. A date for this is still pending. (lia)
