The FBI of the US Federal Police has arrested two suspected agents involved in operating an illegal “police station” in New York on behalf of China. According to the Justice Ministry, the two suspects, aged 59 and 61, are accused of working for the Chinese government.

They also allegedly destroyed evidence. The Chinatown office was closed last fall following an FBI investigation.

102 locations worldwide

According to this information, the two suspects are from the New York boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx. The ministry initially declined to comment on nationality. The first court hearings were scheduled for Monday. Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen of the Justice Department said: “The People’s Republic of China, through its repressive security apparatus, has established a covert physical presence in New York City to monitor and intimidate dissidents and those critical of the government.”

According to human rights activists, China operates more than 100 offices worldwide that are used as illegal “police stations”. The organization Safeguard Defenders announced in December that 102 such facilities had been discovered in 53 countries, including Frankfurt. Beijing has repeatedly denied such reports. According to Safeguard Defenders, there are eleven offices in Italy alone and nine in Spain. There should be four in France, three each in Britain and the US. (SDA)
