A 16-year-old girl’s birthday party turns into a bloodbath. A gunman shot and killed four people Saturday night (local time) in Dadeville, Alabama. In addition, according to the police, 28 people were injured, of which at least five are still in a life-threatening condition.
Most of the victims are young people. The party took place in a dance studio. Little is known about the background to the killing spree – police are hesitant to provide information. According to CNN, there is discontent in the small town of Dadeville with a population of 3,000.
Among the dead was the year-old’s brother, Philstavious D.* He was a popular soccer player at his school. His grandmother told the Montgomery Advertiser that D. was an extremely modest child. “He never messed with anyone. He always had a smile on his face.”
D. had the potential to become a top athlete. He was just weeks away from graduating from high school and had received a scholarship to study football at Jacksonville State University. Jacksonville’s head coach wrote in a statement that D. was a “great young man with a bright future.” “My team and I are heartbroken.”
A Dadeville pastor who served D.’s football team described the deceased as “one of the nicest young men you could ever meet.”
Another victim: Keke S. Like D., the 18-year-old attended Dadeville High School. She was part of the volleyball team. Keke S.’s cousin writes on Facebook: “My heart is torn.” The whole family mourns.
A physical education teacher at her school told the New York Times that S. was “full of joie de vivre.” “A typical 18-year-old.”
Rampages and shootings are part of everyday life in the US. There are more guns in circulation in the United States than anywhere else in the world. The non-governmental organization Gun Violence Archive has recorded more than 5,000 gun deaths since the beginning of the year, not counting suicides.
In late March, three children and three adults were shot dead in a school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee.
US President Joe Biden reacted with horror to the horror act in Dadeville: “What has become of our country when children can no longer go to a birthday party without fear?”
