Passenger numbers continue to increase

As the company announced on Monday evening, 2.08 million people traveled from Zurich Airport in March. This is an increase of 57.8 percent compared to the same period last year.

However, there is still a long way to go before the 2019 level, that is, before the corona pandemic. However, as can be seen from the announcement, the number of passengers has now reached 86 percent of the March 2019 value.

In 18 thousand 558 take-offs or landings, the number of flights increased by 27 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Therefore, the increase in flights is less pronounced than the number of passengers.

Accordingly, the occupancy rate was again higher than a year ago: 80 out of 100 seats on the plane are now occupied again. This is 2 more seats compared to the same month last year. An average of 132 passengers were seated on each inbound and outbound plane.

The increasing number of passengers also increased the sales at the airport stores. Commercial sales increased almost 37 percent to CHF 44.7 million in March.

Airside shops, that is, shops that passed security checks, increased their sales by half, while shops in the airport’s public area increased their sales by about a quarter. Meanwhile, the shops after the security check sell more than the generally accessible shops before the security check.

In contrast, freight dropped after the outbreak during the pandemic: a total of 35,510 tons were handled at the airport in March. This is 14 percent less than the previous year and 16 percent less than in 2019 before Corona.
