Thousands of people demonstrated in Prague against the liberal-conservative government of Prime Minister Petr Fiala (58). Under the motto “Czech Republic against poverty”, they called for more aid on Sunday because of high inflation and spoke out against further aid to Ukraine. Some carried banners with slogans such as “Get out of NATO” and “No to war”. In the late afternoon, after a protest march through the city center, the demonstrators reached the seat of government on the banks of the Vltava. The organizer was the extra-parliamentary party Wet, Respect, Expertise (PRO).
About 200 police officers were deployed to prevent clashes with counter-demonstrators waving blue and yellow Ukrainian flags. According to the Czech Ministry of the Interior, more than 325,000 Ukrainian refugees with protection status are currently living in the EU and NATO member state. The government in Prague is supporting Kiev in the fight against the Russian invasion, which has been going on for more than a year, and has already supplied large quantities of weapons. (SDA)
