What is the best way to write a text that appeals to everyone? Many companies and institutions are currently dealing with this gender issue. Maybe with the sex star, the internal me or the colon?

Official Switzerland has also taken up the issue and has therefore issued guidelines for gender equality. The employees of the federal government must adhere to this when writing texts. The Federal Chancellery established the guidelines.

The gender star is forbidden

In this directive, the Federal Chancellery prohibits civil servants from using the gender star and other typographic means for gender-neutral language.

What bilingual people now notice in the writings that appeared at the beginning of this year: there are very different attitudes, depending on the national language in which the employees of the administration write their text. In German, for example, it is pointed out that one should address as many men and women as possible, for example with formulations such as this: “Voter citizens”. It can also be read that the generic masculine is not allowed in the lyrics.

The French and Italian variants recommend just the opposite. There the generic masculine is dictated. The masculine form is representative of everything. The guide promotes a French that targets “everyone and discriminates against no one,” reads the guide’s foreword.

The Bundesrat sees no problem

Since its publication, several French-speaking voices have criticized the document, RTS reports. Among them is the Walliser SP national councilor Emmanuel Amoos (42).

“I feel like we’ve just lost 20 years of progress towards greater equality,” he tells Blick. It is absurd to want to defend equality and fight discrimination by recommending the use of the generic masculine form in all official state texts, he said.

He wants to know from the Bundesrat whether it is prepared to withdraw these guidelines and to propose new recommendations with the help of experts. But the cabinet sees no urgency in this, it announced in March.

“The vast majority of French and Italian speakers use and understand the generic masculine in its inclusive value as it is taught,” the Federal Council said. Amoos now wants to submit a proposal on this.
