Berlusconi has left intensive care

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi no longer needs intensive care, according to his brother. The Adnkronos news agency and the newspaper “Corriere della Sera” quoted Paolo Berlusconi on Sunday as saying “everything is fine”, he had left intensive care. Shortly before, various Italian media had unanimously reported that the 86-year-old would be transferred to the regular department.

Berlusconi came to the San Raffaele clinic in Milan in early April. He has chronic leukemia and has been treated for pneumonia. On Thursday, a statement from his doctors spoke of a “continued steady improvement” in Berlusconi’s health condition. However, it was said that he still needed intensive care treatment.

The right-wing populist politician was Prime Minister of Italy four times between 1994 and 2011 with interruptions. He has been in poor health for years. At the end of 2020, he fell ill with Covid-19 and pneumonia. In the years before, he had to be hospitalized because of a urinary tract infection. In 2016, he underwent heart surgery. (sda/dpa)
