Russia puts its Pacific fleet on full combat alert

Russia today put in maximum combat alert of its Pacific fleet as part of some exercises to increase its defense capability against attacks, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported. The minister indicated that the main goal of these exercises is to “increase the ability of the Russian armed forces to repel the aggression of a potential enemy from the sea and ocean». He added that units of the Aerospace Forces and support are participating in the exercises.

The scenario for the exercises, under the command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, includes defensive actions against massive air and missile attacks, attempts to search for and destroy submarines, practicing shooting with torpedoes, artillery and missiles.

Shojgu ordered that during the maneuvers the units use new types of operations, in accordance with the development and modern weapons that the enemy possesses.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, General Valeri Guerasimov, indicated that the exercises of the Pacific Fleet will be held in three stages, the first of which is putting them in a state of combat readiness. In the second phase, he added, the ships will be deployed in the maneuver area, and in the third, final phase, shooting and other actions will take place.
