About 18,000 cattle have died in a suspected methane explosion and fire at a Texas dairy farm. A company employee was rescued from a building and injured and taken to hospital.
“This was the deadliest cattle barn fire in Texas history and it will take time to investigate,” Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said Thursday.
The cause of the accident, which happened near Dimmitt on Monday, has not yet been definitively clarified. Castro County Sheriff Sal Rivera said the barn’s cleaning system may have overheated. Methane could have ignited, he told CBS television. An animal protection organization argued for better fire protection on farms. (sda/afp)
