Florida wants to ban abortion by the sixth week

The US state of Florida wants to tighten abortion laws. Abortions from the sixth week will be banned in the future.

The Republican-dominated Legislature in Tallahassee passed a corresponding bill Thursday evening (local time). Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, 44, is expected to sign the bill into law. Until now, abortions are banned in the state from the 15th week of pregnancy.

DeSantis probably sees the tightening of abortion laws as a political success. The conservative 44-year-old is said to have ambitions for a presidential candidate for the Republicans. He is considered the strongest internal party competitor of former President Donald Trump (76), who has already officially signed up.

Criticism from Washington

The US government in Washington sharply criticized the procedure, describing the planned abortion ban from week six as “extreme and dangerous”. “The ban violates fundamental freedoms and is inconsistent with the views of the vast majority of people in Florida and the rest of the United States,” said White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre, 48.

Before many women even knew about their pregnancy, they would have been banned from having an abortion. It would also affect all those women who had to travel to Florida because of bans in other states to have an abortion here.
