For over a week it was unclear who was behind the leaked Pentagon documents. Research by the New York Times and the research platform Bellingcat has now shown that Jack T. * (21) is the culprit. According to the report, he is a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard Intelligence Branch. This also explains why he had access to such highly sensitive documents.
T. ran a private online group called “Thug Shaker Central” in which about 20 to 30 people, mostly young men and teenagers, met because of their shared love of guns, racist online memes, and video games. He will be arrested on Thursday, according to Reuters news agency.
“This man was a Christian, anti-war and just wanted to let some of his friends know what was going on,” one of the group members told the paper. “We have some people in our group who are in Ukraine. We like fighting games, we like war games.”
The newspaper said details of the interior of the young National Guardsman’s childhood home, which were published in family photos posted on social media, matched details in the margins of some photos of the declassified classified documents.
T.’s mother confirmed to the paper outside her Massachusetts home that her son was a member of the Air National Guard and had recently worked night shifts at a base in Cape Cod. He has changed his phone number in recent days, she said. According to the New York Times, T. would also stay with his parents.
Apparently, secret documents from US agencies about Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine have been circulating on the Internet for weeks. Shortly before Easter, American media first reported information about both warring parties – without publishing the documents themselves. An intensive search is underway for the person who published these documents. US authorities are investigating.
US President Joe Biden (80) said on Thursday on the sidelines of a visit to Ireland, with a view to detective investigations: “You are getting closer to the case.” He wasn’t more specific. The Washington Post had previously reported that the alleged author of the data breach worked at a military base.
The young man, who hides behind the mysterious letters “OG”, initially shared the explosive documents as transcripts with a chat group he led on the Discord platform. He later uploaded photos of printed documents there. (chs/SDA)
