A research team led by German Lena Kaufmann examined a female elephant with unusual behavior at the Berlin Zoo. The 36-year-old animal can peel bananas – something many of its peers cannot:
Pang Pha, as the Asian elephant is called, was a gift from the Thai king in 1987. When she was six months old, she came to Berlin, where she was fed for the first time – including peeled bananas. The research team suspects she’s had a taste for it ever since. She then just learned how to peel off people’s skin.
The entire study has been published in Current Biology. (lzo)
