American basketball player Brittney Griner (32) is going to write a book about her ten-month imprisonment in Russia. In it, the star player describes her “difficult and surreal time” and the “terrible sides of everyday life in a penal colony for women”, Griners Verlag Alfred A. Knopf announced on Tuesday. The as-yet untitled memoir should be out in the first half of next year.
Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison for drug smuggling by a Russian court in early August 2022 and then released in December in a spectacular prisoner exchange. The 32-year-old spent a total of nearly ten months in Russian custody after cartridges for e-cigarettes containing small amounts of cannabis oil were found on her at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport in February 2022.
In a statement, the two-time Olympic gold medalist described her arrest as the start of an “incredible chapter” in her life that she is only now able to share with the public. Griner’s imprisonment only ended when the US released the notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor But (56) in exchange. (AFP)
