Sanna Marin presented hers this Thursday resigns from the position of Prime Minister of Finland to the country’s president, Sauli Niinist, a day after he announced that he would resign as head of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after the defeat in the parliamentary elections on Sunday, in which that formation took third place behind the conservatives and the far-right, according to Europa Press.
President Niinisto accepted Marin’s resignation and asked the Government hold office until the appointment of a new executive directorwaiting for election winner Petteri Orpo to start negotiations next week.
Marin will not be in those negotiations to form the government, after he resigned as head of the SDP, a party which, he said, is “ready to rule” in the event that this formation can be part of a future coalition, in which he does not see himself as a minister. However, she will continue to be an alternate.
SDP won 19.9 percent of the votes in Sunday’s electionsand although it improved its results, it fell behind the conservative National Coalition of Petteri Orp and the extreme right of the Finnish Party, so there will be a hint of a political turn in that Nordic country.
He is also leaving the SDP
In addition, Marin resigned from the post of SDP president on Wednesday. Marin will remain in that position until the party that has fallen chooses his successor next year in September.
The leader of the Social Democrats told the Finnish media that, despite the defeat, she was satisfied with the result of the SDP in these elections, because it managed to increase the number of mandates. Somewhat moved, she stated that these three long years at the head of the Government were difficult for her and they put their own resilience to the test.
“These were extremely difficult years and difficult times. With this election result, I feel that I have the opportunity to turn the page in my own life.”he told reporters. Marin, who was seeking re-election as prime minister, will continue her political career as a deputy, although before that she will lead her party during negotiations with the Conservatives to form the next coalition executive.
“SDP is ready to rule. We are strong negotiators, but also a cooperative party that has been in government many times in Finnish history.”, he asserted. She also made it clear that, in the event that the SDP is in the next executive power, she does not aspire to any ministerial position. Asked what she considers to be her legacy, Marin said that the SDP is “more united than ever” and she is convinced that it will be the same after her resignation.
The conservative leader, Petteri Orpo, plans to start talks next week on forming a government with all parties that have parliamentary representation, in order to try to reach a coalition with a large majority in Eduskunta.
