Good Lord! Used cars have become significantly more expensive in the past year

New car prices are skyrocketing, but so are used car prices. According to figures from Gaspead.nl, they have become up to 30 percent more expensive in the past year. Repeat: 30 percent!

These are sedans that cost a third more today than they did a year ago. Then comes the hatchback, which rose from an average of €12,547 in 2021 to €15,570 now, an increase of almost 25 percent.

The supply of used cars cannot keep up with the demand

It is striking that SUVs were “only” 11 percent more expensive and the average price sought is only 1000 euros below the average asking price. For other body variants, the difference is 2500 to 7000 euros.

This is partly because supply cannot keep up with demand. Almost a quarter of searches on Gaspedal.nl relate to station wagons, while supply is only 13 percent. With SUVs it’s the other way around. Supply: 26 percent. Question: 22 percent.

SUVs twice as popular as two years ago

In fact, SUVs are becoming more and more popular. In March 2021, only 10 percent of Accelerator users were still looking for an SUV. This car type was even less popular than a convertible, which was desired by 15 percent of the public.

Now, two years later, things are different. No fewer than 22 percent of car buyers are now looking for SUVs on the comparison portal. Which, by the way, disappoints us. We expected a higher percentage.

The demand for station wagons has fallen relatively sharply

The increasing popularity of SUVs is primarily at the expense of station wagons. Two years ago, it accounted for 31 percent of searches. Now it’s only 24 percent.

The hatchback continues to play a major role in the market, although demand has fallen from 21 percent to 18 percent over the past two years. Only 9 percent of the public are still waiting for a convertible.

The fact that there is more search for SUVs says something about the changing demand, but also the changing supply. In recent years, manufacturers have replaced many traditional models with crossovers and SUVs.
