After her defeat in the parliamentary elections in Finland, Prime Minister Sanna Marin (37) submitted her government’s resignation. President Sauli Niinistö (74) accepted the request, his office announced on Thursday. However, the 37-year-old social democrat will stay on until her successor is found.
Marin has been Prime Minister since the end of 2019. She leads a centre-left coalition of five parties. However, in Sunday’s elections, your Social Democrats were only the third strongest force behind the conservative National Coalition Party and the right-wing populist party The Finns. This marks a change of government in Helsinki. The conservative election winner Petteri Orpo (53) wants to talk to all parties after Easter about a possible new government coalition.
Marin announced on Wednesday during a party conference in September that she would resign from her position as party leader of the Social Democrats. After that she wants to continue as a normal member of parliament in Helsinki. (nad/SDA)
