The US weather service warned Wednesday night (local time) for strong wind gusts and hailstones with a diameter of up to five centimeters. Like the weekend, tornadoes are also possible on Wednesday, it said. Parts of the central US states of Kansas and Missouri have been particularly affected.
In Fulton County, Illinois, a tornado damaged buildings and power poles, the local civil defense agency said on Facebook. Several people were injured and initially nothing was known about the dead. The local sheriff’s office reported gas leaks and littering debris on Facebook. Thousands of people were temporarily without power, according to the website “poweroutage.us”.
At least 26 people died and dozens were injured as a result of violent hurricanes in several US states over the weekend. Media spoke of a rare “monstrous storm system” stretching from the southern United States to the Great Lakes region in the north. Experts also attribute the increase in natural disasters in the US to the effects of climate change.
