US President Joe Biden will not attend the upcoming coronation of British King Charles III. Participate. The White House said Tuesday evening (local time) that Biden called Charles and told him that First Lady Jill Biden would represent the United States at the May ceremony.
The US president had expressed a wish to meet Charles in Britain at another time. The coronation of the British king will take place on May 6 at Westminster Abbey in London in the presence of numerous international guests.
President Biden is expected to visit Ireland and Northern Ireland in April. The backdrop is the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. So far nothing is known about a possible meeting with the British king in the margins of this visit.
The Good Friday Agreement of 10 April 1998 ended decades of civil strife in Northern Ireland between Protestant supporters of union with Britain and Catholic supporters of reunification with the Republic of Ireland. (sda/dpa)
