Russia will deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus – on the border with Poland. This was announced by the Moscow ambassador in Minsk, Boris Gryzlov, on Sunday. By July 1, the bunkers needed to store the weapons must be completed.
Gryzlov, who was also a former Russian interior minister and chairman of the State Duma, also addressed the West’s reactions to the announced plans in the message:
He even appreciated the fact that the planned deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus was already causing “a lot of fuss” in the Western media. “Finally, it is recognized that there must be some parity,” Gryslow said.
Gyslow justified the nuclear weapons being brought to the Polish border as follows:
Because unlike the territory of the countries where the US has stationed its nuclear weapons, the union state of Russia and Belarus is a legalized territory. “For them, these countries are just puppets, but we have a common space,” said Boris Gryzlov.
Against the background of high tensions with the West due to the war in Ukraine, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin recently announced that he is stationing tactical nuclear weapons in the neighboring ex-Soviet Republic of Belarus. He justified the stationing by saying that the US had been doing something similar in Europe for years.
An analysis by the American Institute for War Studies (ISW) said a week ago that Putin wants to stir up fears of a nuclear escalation in the West in order to break support for Ukraine, for example in the supply of heavy weapons. According to the ISW assessment, it is still “highly unlikely that Russia will use nuclear weapons in Ukraine or anywhere else.” According to the ISW, Putin’s move was announced before the war in Ukraine. By stationing nuclear weapons in Belarus, Russia is mainly strengthening its influence in the ex-Soviet republic.
