The head of Iran’s judiciary, Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Edschehi, has threatened punishment for women who ignore the mandatory headscarf in public. Removing the hijab amounts to a hostile attitude to the Iranian system and its values, he said, according to a report by Fars news agency on Saturday. In addition, not wearing the headscarf is against public morals and against Sharia and the laws of the land. These violations are supported by Iran’s enemies.
After the fall 2022 protests against the Islamic system of rule, more and more women are demonstratively ignoring the dress code. In many cities, authorities are now turning a blind eye. At the same time, violations of the headscarf requirement are monitored by means of video surveillance.
The fall uprisings plunged political leaders into one of the worst crises in decades. The reason was the death of the Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in mid-September. She died in police custody after being arrested for violating the Islamic dress code. (sda/dpa)
