Sarah Atcho has had a rough few years. In addition to serious knee injuries, a pericarditis threw her back again in January 2022. And even before that, the woman from Lausanne fell into depression.
“I lay in my bed and cried every day,” Atcho told Blick after missing the Tokyo Olympics. De Romande then received psychological support, Atcho revealed in an interview with “Radio SRF 1″. In addition, it helped her to be open about it. “I know that people are often ashamed of it. I had no problem talking about it. I knew I needed help. It was important for me to say, ‘Hey, we all have issues, it’s okay.'”
Now she has found her smile again. At the Swiss Indoor Championships in February this year, the 27-year-old improved her best time over 60 meters to 7.21 – breaking the European Championship limit. “After three difficult years it was a liberation. I just needed that one good performance to tie the knot. Now I can do almost anything.”
Atcho was in the spotlight again last year at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene. In the lead role, she represented the equipped Mujinga Kambundji. Together with her colleagues, Atcho sprinted into the final, which Switzerland – without Atcho – finished in 7th place. (tired)
