India now has four baby cheetahs for the first time in 70 years

Cheetahs had been extinct in India for seven decades. However, as part of a reintroduction program, 50 cheetahs will find a new home in Indian national parks within the next five years. Eight of them were quarantined in the same national park last November after acclimatizing for a month. The group of cheetahs consisted of three males and five females and originated from Namibia. One of these five females gave birth to cheetah offspring for the first time in 70 years.

Cheetahs are the only large carnivores in India that have gone extinct. The main reason for this is the time of British colonialism, when forests were cut down to make way for plantations and the like. With the shrinking forests, the habitat of the big cat also shrank more and more.

Today, cheetahs mainly live in South and East Africa, namely in Namibia, Kenya and Tanzania. However, they used to be widespread in the Middle East, central India and parts of sub-Saharan Africa as well.
