The EU must become more independent and, above all, minimize economic risks compared to the world’s most densely populated country.

“Our relations are unbalanced and increasingly affected by the disruptions caused by China’s state capitalist system,” von der Leyen said in Brussels on Thursday. “As such, we need to rebalance these relationships based on transparency, predictability and reciprocity.”

Von der Leyen wants to travel to Beijing next week with French President Emmanuel Macron for political talks. On Thursday, she delivered a keynote address on EU-China relations. She addressed the challenges, such as human rights violations in China, Beijing’s military presence in the immediate vicinity, the proximity of Russian President Vladimir Putin and China’s economic strength.

“I think it is neither feasible nor in Europe’s interest to disengage from China,” Von der Leyen emphasises. It is crucial to ensure diplomatic stability and open communication links. She mentioned the fight against climate change and nature conservation as areas where cooperation is possible.
