The municipality of Amsterdam wants to curb party tourism with a new campaign.

Recently, Amsterdam announced a cannabis ban in the red light district, restrictions on alcohol consumption and early closure of cafes, bars and sex clubs.

In the fight against excessive party tourism, the city is now going a step further: in the course of a campaign, the city is also clearing tourists – starting with young British men.

As “The Guardian” reports, the city has allegedly asked the British to “stay away”. It particularly concerns those tourists who flirt with sex, drug or alcohol abuse on their trip to Amsterdam: “The campaign is intended to annoy tourists who want to visit Amsterdam to ‘blow off steam’,” the statement said. city government. .

“We’d rather not, so stay away”

According to the newspaper, research has shown that both British men aged 18 to 35 and Dutch men of a similar age cause the most nuisance in the Red Light District. Nightly drinking and drug use regularly robs residents of their night’s sleep.

City officials say the campaign will launch in the UK this week and will expand throughout the year. It is also aimed at “potentially disruptive visitors” from the Netherlands and other EU countries.

People in the UK who enter search terms such as “bachelorette party Amsterdam”, “cheap hotel amsterdam” and “bar tour amsterdam” on the internet immediately see warning ads. It informs tourists about the risks of excessive alcohol and drug use and the possible consequences that can be associated with it: fines, hospitalization and permanent damage to health.

Nevertheless, Sofyan Mbarki, deputy mayor of Economy and Home Affairs, emphasizes that visitors are still welcome in Amsterdam. However, anyone misbehaving and causing harassment should stay away. “As a city, we say: we would rather not do that, so stay away,” says Mbarki.

The president of Lanzarote also did not leave the British in a good mood

Amsterdam has long been trying to keep party tourists out of the city. The current campaign should not be the last measure in the fight against visitors who want to blow off steam. Authorities should also consider relocating the sex workers to large “erotic centers” on the outskirts of the city.

Mob Brits are not only unwanted in Amsterdam. A few weeks ago, a statement by the president of Lanzarote, Maria Dolores Corujo (45), caused outrage. She had said the island wanted to be “more willing to spend” to attract tourists and be less dependent on Britons. (dzc)
