Today, the European Court of Justice decides on the lawsuit brought by climate seniors against the federal government

Today, Wednesday, the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) is hearing the complaint of the Swiss Association of Climate Seniors and four other women. They demand more measures from the federal government to combat climate change.

In April 2017, the Federal Public Service Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication (DETEC) did not respond to the request. It justified this decision by saying that the members of the association and the four other women are no more affected by the effects of climate change than the rest of the population. So they lack a special care.

Both the Federal Administrative Court and the Federal Supreme Court subsequently supported this view. The complainants therefore went to the European Court of Human Rights. In their complaint they alleged a violation of their right to life and to respect for their private and family life. They also asserted their right to due process and an effective remedy. (sda)
