“Only” tip of $70? New York waitress Madison Tayt has sparked controversy on social media with an angry tweet about European tipping culture.
“Sometimes I hate Europeans,” Tayt wrote in the post, which has been viewed millions of times. “We should ban Europeans from traveling here until they learn how to behave,” she added. The reason for the anger tweet: With a $700 bill, guests from Spain only tipped 10 percent.
Her manager asked about the service and the Spaniards were extremely pleased. “He explained that the usual tip is 20 percent,” Tayt reports. But the European tourists didn’t seem to care, according to Tayt, they just left without increasing the tip.
That opened the debate. The key question: is Spain a badly tipped country – or is America’s low-wage culture the cause of the problems?
One person agreed with Tayt. Europeans are “actually the worst customers”. Another Twitter user disagreed. “In Spain, you’re lucky if you get a 1 euro tip!” he wrote. “Have you considered asking your boss for a raise so you don’t rely on tips to earn a decent wage?” asks another.
Tipping is not mandatory in Spain. Instead, it is customary to leave a few coins for a cup of coffee and between five and ten percent for a meal. “Spaniards are not stingy tipsters,” says British James Blick (44), a Youtuber from Madrid specializing in gastronomy, from the English “Times”. “Even if they don’t leave anything behind, it’s not stingy because wages in Spain aren’t based on tips like they are in the US.”
Americans, on the other hand, seem more willing to spend money when they travel. Sara Tejada (28) serves tables in Madrid and explains to the newspaper: “The people who tip the most are, as a rule, foreigners from countries where tipping is mandatory.”
Madison Tayt seems to have become overwhelmed by all the fuss surrounding her tweet. She deleted the post and deactivated her Twitter account. (nad)
