According to information from the German news agency, talks on a number of conflict issues are still ongoing. They started on Sunday evening. A long session that lasted well into the night was expected in advance.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) plans to travel to Rotterdam with seven ministers in the late afternoon for consultations with the Dutch government.

At the meeting in the Chancellery, the coalition partners want to find solutions to a long list of controversial issues. This also includes the transport sector. The FDP (liberals) wants not only railway lines to be built faster, but also highways. The Greens rejected this before the start of negotiations. They pushed for increased climate protection efforts in transportation to bring about a turnaround.

According to figures from the Federal Environment Agency, greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector increased last year. Specifications in the Climate Protection Act for the permitted annual emissions were missed. The FDP rejects a general speed limit on highways, as well as a reform of the company car tax.

Before the start of the coalition committee, plans to replace oil and gas heating systems and the funding of basic child protection were also controversial.

The FDP budget politician Otto Fricke said on Deutschlandfunk on Monday morning that the long negotiations were more a sign for him that solutions were being sought through compromise.

In recent weeks, the tone in the German coalition had become much rougher. Vice Chancellor Habeck had even complained of a breach of trust as a bill to replace his home’s oil and gas heating systems had been printed by the media.

CDU leader and opposition leader Friedrich Merz called the ban on new oil and gas heating systems planned for 2024 in the ARD program “Report from Berlin” a mistake on Sunday. He accused the coalition of relying too much on prohibitions and paternalism when it came to climate protection.

Before the coalition committee, FDP politicians repeatedly urged discipline in spending money – especially in view of the federal budget for 2024 that is now on the table.
