Paris is sinking into mountains of rubbish

The garbage piles up in Paris. The streets are almost invisible.

In Paris, the garbage bags are piled so high that the streets can no longer be seen. Images posted on social media show piles of rubbish scattered across the city.

The reason for the escalation is the strike of workers at the waste incineration plants in the Paris region. They have not taken out the garbage for 22 days in protest against the pension reform decided by the government of President Emmanuel Macron (45). This aims to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 years. That is why people are taking to the streets all over the country.

The Parisians have no choice but to temporarily store the waste on the street, local residents tell local media.

Yet many show solidarity with the workers, such as a resident Twitter writes: “It’s incredible. There are rats everywhere. But I stand behind these guys 200 percent. You have to smell the stench every day. You don’t deserve to have to work any longer.”

self-critical president

But there are also critical voices. A 27-year-old Frenchman wrote on Twitter that while France is a country of solidarity, its inhabitants are increasingly critical of the protests and paralyzed public life.

The Macron government is trying to appease the people. After weeks of protests, the president was self-critical in a TV interview. He regrets that he has not been better able to win people over to this reform. (A)
