Brazil’s former head of state, Rousseff, becomes president of Brics Bank

Dilma Rousseff, former head of state of Brazil, has been elected as the new president of the New Development Bank (NDB). She succeeds her predecessor Marcos Troyjo and completes the presidency of Brazil, which will last until mid-2025, the bank announced on Friday.

The NDB was founded by the Brics countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It finances infrastructure and development projects. The Brics countries represent about a third of the world’s population and almost a quarter of global economic output. Bangladesh, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Uruguay also joined the bank two years ago.

Rousseff was president of Brazil from 2011 to 2016. She is considered a confidante of the incumbent head of state Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. During her tenure, she focused on securing the country’s economic stability and creating jobs, according to the FIS. She was removed from office in 2016. She was accused of manipulating the state budget. (sda/dpa)
