Escaped thanks to a toothbrush – caught chewing pancakes

In the US, two inmates John G.* (37) and Arley N.* (43) drilled a hole in the prison wall with toothbrushes. According to authorities, guards at the Newport News Jail Annex in the US state of Virginia noticed the men’s disappearance Monday night.

G. and N. had made tools from a toothbrush and a metal object, using a weak point in the prison wall. This is how they came into possession of unsecured rebars used in the construction: they poked a hole in the wall with one and removed the other to escape from the detention center.

But their time in freedom was soon over: Early Tuesday morning, police arrested the men at an International House of Pancakes (IHOP) restaurant chain in the nearby town of Hampton. Authorities have not said whether the men were caught inside or outside the pancake house.

The 37-year-old was detained for, among other things, violating probation conditions and his 43-year-old escape accomplice is being held for credit card fraud and forgery, among other things.

Authorities did not say exactly how the men used the weak point in the prison building. Since such vulnerabilities can be found all over the prison, “for security reasons, we will not be discussing the situation further,” he said. (AFP/jmh)
