In one year there will be an anniversary: then EHC Olten will have managed to spend 30 years in a row in the second highest Swiss hockey league.
How many things have you tried to escape the National League B, later the Swiss League: in the 1990s the club almost collapsed financially, then it lurched around in the lowlands of the B-League. For a decade, promotion has been the target, by any means necessary: with expensive squads, cheap squads, with master trainers, no-name coaches, cheap foreigners, with high-quality imports. They even hired a Rötheli! Lucas Rötheli, the talented son of Olten hockey legend André Rötheli, kept a goal last season.
But even that didn’t help, this season ended with the same conclusion as every season since 1994: It’s not enough. Not for promotion, not even for the B-title.
This outwardly proves that the mouse is to blame. After all, it’s also been 30 years since EHC Olten got into the whole mess: That’s when a resourceful marketing person came up with the idea of changing the club’s crest. Get rid of the classic logo with the three fir trees, bring on the «power mouse», well, mouse. They have to take the cliché Oltens as a gray mouse on the shovel.
The result: in the first year with the animal on your chest you were immediately relegated. And you’ve been floating ever since. Everything has changed in the last 30 years. Only this unfortunate mouse still features in the club logo. As we all know, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Einstein already knew that. So the thing is clear: the mouse has to go. Everything else would be cheese.
