After his statements about the ‘Partygate’ affair before a parliamentary committee, criticism of the British former Prime Minister Boris Johnson is growing.
“Boris has set his future on fire,” the Politico portal quoted a Johnson’s Conservative Party MP on Thursday as saying. The 58-year-old’s aggressive and short-tempered tone and his “threaded” answers were particularly criticized. The former prime minister is “in danger” after “angry rows” with members of the Committee of Privileges, the newspaper “i” wrote.
The committee must clarify whether Johnson lied to parliament in the “Partygate” affair. In this case, he risks being suspended from the House of Commons, which could eventually lead to the loss of his mandate. The then head of government had repeatedly emphasized in the House of Representatives that he knew nothing about illegal lockdown parties in Downing Street. Meanwhile, Johnson has admitted false information but denies intent. The committee, which also includes a few conservative MPs, does not believe him, according to the survey.
Although the conservative Daily Mail praised Johnson as “agile as a cat”. However, many commentators pointed out that his attempted revolt against incumbent Prime Minister Rishi Sunak over Brexit rules for Northern Ireland had failed. Despite Johnson’s outspoken opposition to Sunak’s deal with the EU, few Tories supported him in the vote. “Double humiliation in the House of Commons for inflammatory Boris,” headlined the “Independent”. Conservative columnist Camilla Tominey responded in the Telegraph, for which Johnson once worked: “The sect surrounding Boris Johnson – and his Brexit dream – is imploding.” (aeg/sda/dpa)
