If you put on big pants, shame is doubly embarrassing. This happened to a tourist (43) from the US in Florence on Monday. The man wanted to see the sights of the Italian city from a bright red Ferrari Spider with Swiss license plates. In doing so, he violated more than just a traffic rule.
First he drove down Via dei Gondi in the opposite direction of the traffic. Then he parked in the pedestrian area in the famous Piazza della Signoria. It is usually teeming with tourists – there are several attractions in the area, such as the Palazzo Vecchio or the Uffizi Gallery, home to some of Italy’s most famous works of art. The place is closed to traffic.
The incident happened around 1:15 p.m., reports the “Corriere Fiorentino”. Since there are always police officers on the world-famous square, the illegal parking did not go unnoticed for long. A check by the officials eventually showed that the tourist also did not have the necessary papers to drive a car in Italy. The city of Florence said in a statement: “The checks revealed that the 43-year-old driver had a US driver’s license that did not meet international conventions and could not provide an international driver’s license or an official translation.”
The police imposed a fine of 470 euros on the spot for parking in a pedestrian area, driving against and for the non-compliant foreign driving license. The American tourist paid the fine directly to the agents.
It’s not the first time in recent months that tourists have run into trouble in Italy’s historic hotspots. It wasn’t until January that a tourist – also from the US – ventured onto the Ponte Vecchio in Florence in a rented Fiat Panda. It’s just stupid: even car traffic has no place on the famous pedestrian bridge over the river Arno. The man had to pay a fine of 500 euros.
In May, a man from Saudi Arabia drove down the Spanish Steps in Rome in a rented Maserati. When the sports car got stuck halfway, he fled. He was later arrested trying to leave Italy. He was accused of damaging a cultural monument. (no)
