And after Martigny and Arosa met in the semi-finals, it was clear from that moment on that there was no two-way ticket to promotion to the Swiss league. Arosa failed in sports.

But in fact it is only clear that nothing is clear – and it will probably remain so for a while. Because it is still unclear what will happen to the financially troubled Ticino Rockets and whether they will play in the Swiss league next season. Or that EHC Arosa can move up next to Martigny as the second and only candidate and take its place in the Swiss league. The citizens of Ticino, who live in Biasca, passed the deadline for a possible voluntary descent without taking advantage of it. This leaves only two options for them: Swiss league or complete withdrawal with a possible restart in the 4th league.

Ticino Rockets in Bellinzona instead of Biasca

Last week, the Ticino Rockets announced that the proposed share capital raise was successful, they are now tinkering with the future but need confirmation of further funding. This has increased the chance that they will play in the Swiss league next season. But that is not certain yet. Because in addition to the financial question marks, there are other uncertainties.

GDT Bellinzona, which may move on to the MyHockey League as a promoter, is new alongside HC Ambri-Piotta as the main shareholder of the Ticino Rockets. And according to reports, the license for the Swiss league is being transferred from Biasca to Bellinzona. But unlike in women’s ice hockey, such license transfers are not possible in men’s ice hockey. A merger between Bellinzona and Biasca, on the other hand, is. The deadline for team registrations expires at the end of April and the Ticino Rockets should have made a decision by then. But a team can always withdraw later. Even in summer. So it may take a while.

Arosa probably bites the bullseye

EHC Arosa suffers from this obscure situation. In order to plan, he now needs to know in which league he will play next season. There is also another problem. Like Martigny, Arosa is contractually committed to accept promotion. A later withdrawal would be severely penalized by the association. Possibly with a relegation to the 4th class, which would of course be a disaster for the club.

That is why EHC Arosa currently tends to tie the knot if necessary and accept promotion – whenever. To then compete with his MyHockey League team and possibly two foreigners. Given the whole problem, no one would accuse them of being that athletically barely competitive. Since there will be no relegation from the Swiss league next season, the Arosa team could then calmly improve their competitiveness for the 2024/25 season.
