The fighters insulted the young Kurds in Djindiris, Kurdish activists and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Tuesday. They suddenly opened fire on the family, killing four people and wounding three others.
The group responsible, Ahrar al-Sharkiya (“Free Men of the East”) is known for its hatred of Kurds, one of the activists said. The group was formed in Syria in early 2016 from fighters who hailed from Dair as-Saur in the east near the Iraqi border. The Kurdish activists of the Rojava Information Center identified some of its members as former militants of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia. She is accused of killing Kurds and violating human rights. The US has imposed sanctions on the group and two of its leaders.
Ahrar al-Sharkiya controls the town of Djindiris, which was hit hard by the earthquake in the Syrian-Turkish border area in early February. Turkey and Turkish-backed rebels seized areas in the Syrian district of Afrin in 2018.
Newroz is celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan and the Kurdish areas of Turkey, Syria and Iraq, among others. The festival marks the beginning of spring. For the Kurds, the festival is also a symbol of political resistance.
