In no other country in the world are people as happy as Finland: for the sixth time in a row, they top the World Happiness Report, which the UN published on Monday on the occasion of International Happiness Day. Ukraine moved from 98th to 92nd place despite the Russian war of aggression, which is mainly attributed to the great sense of community among the people. Switzerland finally finishes in eighth place.

Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, general well-being in Ukraine has declined slightly, according to the report. But what was recorded was an “extraordinary increase in a sense of belonging”, as Professor Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, one of the report’s editors, said. Given the great suffering and the enormous war damage, the willingness to help strangers and the willingness to donate increased. In Russia, on the other hand, the benevolence of the people has declined.

Germany in 16th place

Trust in the government has also increased in Ukraine since the start of the war, higher than after Russia’s annexation of the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea in 2014, according to the report.

Finland and Denmark follow at the top of the ranking. Israel moved five places to fourth. The top ten also includes the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Luxembourg and New Zealand.

Germany is in 16th place this time – two places worse than last year. The Baltics, on the other hand, have continued to improve, with Lithuania displacing France from 20th and Estonia moving up to 31st from 66th in 2017. The people of Afghanistan are the unhappiest since 2020 – again occupying last place this year.

For the World Happiness Report, which has been commissioned by the United Nations since 2012, residents of 137 countries were surveyed about their quality of life.
