Paris- At least a hundred people were arrested last night in anti-government protests in France against the decree adoption of the pension reform, which increases the minimum retirement age from 62 to 64 years.
However, that number is lower than in previous days. On Thursday evening, a few hours after the adoption of the reform, there were more than 200 of them throughout the country.
This new type of protest, organized outside parties and unions, are more unstable and unpredictable. The number of mobilizations this Sunday is currently unknown.
There were 81 detainees in Paris at the end of the protest at the Place d’Italie, the place chosen instead of the Place de la Concorde, where the authorities had banned any protest due to the riots of the previous nights.
They were joined by dozens of others arrested in the same case Place de la Concorde.
At the end of the march, in which slogans against Macron’s “authoritarianism” were heard, containers were set on fire and barricades were erected. The police responded with tear gas when projectiles were fired by some protesters.
At Place d’Italie, it is estimated that the least 4,000 participants.
17 of them were arrested in Lyon in a small protest between 400 and 500 people.
While, pension reform further sunk French President Emmanuel Macron’s popularity in Marchand currently only 28% of the French approve of his governance, the lowest level of his terms comparable to that of the “Yellow Vest” crisis, the popular uprising that put him on the ropes in 2018.
The executive branch shows no signs of backing down. His number two, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire, assured in an interview with Le Parisien that the reform “will take effect” and warned that any kind of violence in the protests “will not be tolerated”.
The Government itself he faces two no-confidence motions tomorrow, Monday presented by a group of centrists and regionalists, supported by the left, and another from the extreme right.
Moreover, both initiatives have little chance of success, in the event that the conservative formation Los Republicanos (LR) manages to maintain the voting discipline that they did not achieve on the 16th, when the executive power, in a relative minority, was forced to activate Article 49.3 due to the absence of a clear majority in the assemblies.
Union strikes against the reform continue their course. Several refineries have been blocked, and there are also delays in garbage collection in Paris.
Despite the fact that the Government forced the return of some workers due to public health, thousands of tons of garbage continue to pile up on the sidewalks.
Paris City Hallwhich supports the strike and does not cooperate with the Government, estimated that the amount of waste has stabilized at 10,000 tons.
